Qaspal The Cheltenham Bounty Hunter

The JP Mcmanus owned Qaspal could now head to Cheltenham in pursuit of a £75,000 bonus after winning Saturday’s Imperial Cup at Sandown. Paddy Power offer the bonus to the winner of the race if they can then go on to win any other race at the Cheltenham Festival.

Jockey Tony McCoy shed the pounds in order to get to one of his lowest ever racing weights and take the mount on Qaspal. However, he lost none of his strength in doing so as he showed when getting the Philip Hobbs trained horse home ahead of stable companion Oldrik in a gruelling finish.

The horse has two entries at Cheltenham but the County Hurdle looks to be the most likely route. The double would be a feat which Hobbs managed to achieve back in 1990 when saddling Moody Man to victory in both races, but that was before the generous bonus was on offer. The bookies aren’t taking any chance on a repeat and Ladbrokes have duly installed Qaspal as the 4/1 favourite for the race.
