Master Minded To Make Cheltenham Betting History

Rarely do we have the opportunity to see true greats in any walk of life and the term legendary is often overused in sport. However, Master Minded will go down as one of the true greats of National Hunt racing if he claims a third consecutive victory in Cheltenham's Queen Mother Champion Chase today.

His Champion Chase victory in 2008 as a five-year-old made him the youngest ever winner of the race and the 19 length victory meant he became the highest rated chaser in training. In 2009 he followed up with another comfortable victory this time by a shorter margin of seven lengths, but later that year he was diagnosed with a fractured rib and there were some doubts as to whether he could ever return to his demonstrative best.

However, a 13 length victory at Newbury earlier this year quashed any doubts and in the lead up to today’s Champion Chase trainer Paul Nicholls has stated that he believes Master Minded is “back to where he was when he won the race two years ago”, an ominous proclamation for connections to any of his rivals. Victor Chandler (Go to VCBet ») go 10/11 on Master Minded completing the hat-trick and Blue Square (Go to Blue Square ») are 5/2 that he wins the race by five lengths or more; if he is indeed back to his best then those odds could look rather generous come 15:30 this afternoon.
