Eurovision Betting Is Heating Up

Azerbaijan may not be a nation considered to be prominent in the sports betting world but they are big players on the Eurovision betting scene where they are the 2/1 favourites with Irish bookmaker Paddy Power (Go to Paddy Power »). An eighth place finish in their inaugural Eurovision year in 2008 was followed up by a third place finish in 2009 and now the task of going two better belongs to 17 year old singer Safura Alizadeh who will sing “Drip Drop” at the contest in Oslo.

The German and Israeli entries are vying for second favouritism in the betting and are available at 5/1 and 6/1 respectively with Boyle Sports (Go to Boyle Sports ») whilst Norway are a 16/1 chance to make it back to back victories in the contest.

Political issues have ensured that the United Kingdom is without a winner since Katrina and the Waves won the contest with “Love Shine A Light” back in 1997. However, there were marked signs of improvement when Jade Ewen sang the Andrew Lloyd Webber penned “It’s My Time” and took fifth place at last year’s contest.

Despite that result the bookmakers aren’t confident in this year’s contestant Josh Dubovie improving on that result and Betfred (Go to Betfred ») go a massive 100/1 on a UK victory. Eurovision voters may have pushed political issues involving the UK to one side in 2009, but will they continue to do so in 2010? And even if they do, is this year’s song, written by Pete Waterman, good enough to take victory?
