Rooney World Cup In Doubt
Wayne Rooney had to be helped off the pitch in the Allianz Arena after Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez appeared to stamp on the England forward’s foot. Rooney grabbed the opening goal of the game inside just two minutes but second half strikes from Frank Ribery and Ivica Olic in injury time mean that the German side will take a 2-1 lead to Old Trafford next Wednesday.
The injury to Rooney – of which the extent is not yet known – means that events of the game are now certain to fill both the front and back pages of the morning’s papers. Will this apparent injury put his chances of playing at this summer’s World Cup in doubt? If he doesn’t go, do England have any chance of winning in South Africa? And what of Manchester United’s chances in both the Champions League and English Premier League?
United remain the slight 10/11 favourites with Betfair (Go to Betfair ») to qualify for the semi-final, whilst their odds of winning the weekend’s big Premier League clash with Chelsea have drifted out from 6/4 to 15/8 as a result of Rooney’s potential injury problem. As far as England’s World Cup chances go punters and bookmakers appear to be waiting for more information before they decide on how to play that one; England remain at odds of 6/1 to lift the trophy.
