Denman Withdrawn From Scottish National

Trainer Paul Nicholls has taken the decision to withdraw 2008 Gold Cup winner Denman from this month’s Scottish Grand National. The Harry Findlay owned horse was expected to line-up as the clear betting favourite at Ayr racecourse this coming Saturday but due to an expected few days of good weather Denman wouldn’t get the soft ground that he so likes and thus won’t be running in the race.

Denman is now expected to run in the Guinness Gold Cup at Punchestown on 21 April and is likely to be ridden by Grand National winner and 14-time Champion jockey Tony McCoy. Jockey Ruby Walsh would ordinarily have taken the ride but he sustained a broken arm at Aintree on Saturday after taking a crashing fall aboard Celestial Halo in the Aintree Hurdle.

The withdrawal of Denman means that Poker de Sivola now heads the Scottish National betting at 6/1 with Totesport (Go to Totesport »), whilst Chief Dan George and Meanus Dandy are available at 7/1 with Betfred (Go to Betfred »).
