Lee Westwood Open Dream in the Balance

Golf’s world number three Lee Westwood is facing a battle against time to be fit enough to play in next week’s Open Championship at St Andrews.  Westwood picked up a calf injury whilst playing in last week’s French Open but initial fears of a blood clot have now been put to rest following tests in a Paris hospital at the weekend.

The Englishman has now been told to get as much rest as possible ahead of next week and has thus pulled out of the JP McManus pro-am event that he was due to play in Ireland this week. He has also put off playing a practise round at St Andrews on Thursday but is hoping to take to the course on Monday.

Westwood is currently enjoying one of the best seasons of his career after narrowly missing out on the US Masters title and then taking victory in the St Jude Classic.

Despite the concerns surrounding his fitness Westwood remains the 14/1 second favourite for The Open with William Hill, Tiger Woods of course is the betting favourite at 7/2 and last year’s winner Stewart Cink is an 80/1 shot.
