Harry Ellis Forced to Retire
Leicester and England scrum-half Harry Ellis has been forced to retire from professional rugby due to persistent knee problems. Ellis won 27 caps for England throughout his career but has not been fully fit since undergoing reconstructive surgery on his knee in 2007 and has today decided to call it a day after another season plagued by injury.
Ellis has been sidelined for 10 months now and played just 24 out of a possible 173 for Leicester, his last appearance in an England jersey coming in the 26-12 victory over Scotland at Twickenham in March 2009. He also made one appearance for the British Lions, coming on as a substitute in the final test win against the Springboks in 2009.
The player who was born and raised in Leicester and became a product of the Tigers academy had consulted orthopaedic surgeon Andy Williams prior to making his decision. He commented “It was a very hard decision to make, but it was also easy on the basis of what it had been doing to me.”
