Tiger Woods Has Trouble with Wind

Tiger Woods was among many players who struggled with the windy conditions in Sunday’s Open Championship practice round at St Andrews.

Winds of up to 50mph wreaked havoc on preparations for the oldest competition in golf with Tiger’s tee shot on the 11th hole landing on the 7th green. He commented from the 18th tee that "Nobody can play St Andrews [in conditions] like this," the world number one tore the course apart on his two previous visits to St Andrews, winning with a score of 19 under par in 2000 and 14 under par in 2005.

However, on both of those occasions the notoriously gusty Scottish winds were conspicuous by their absence. Yesterday’s practice round suggests that players might have to deal with slightly more tricky conditions this time around.

Scott Verplank had a put on the fourth green which ran 10 feet past the hole and was then blown back past his feet finishing 20 feet behind him. Henrik Stenson suffered similar problems when chipping out of a green-side bunker on the par-three 11th.

Winds are expected to die down to around the 30mph level by the end of the week, which would still serve up tricky conditions. Look out for The Open Championship ‘winning score’ markets when they emerge, it could be a much higher score than in previous years.
