Lee Westwood Will Play In The Open

Lee Westwood will compete in this week’s 139th Open Championship despite an injury to his right calf muscle which he has been told will take 6-8 weeks recovery time.

The current world number three has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career so far this year including a second place finish at the US Masters in April which followed a third place finish at last year’s Open. Despite the doctors advice of rest Westwood will strap up his injured calf and battle on, stating "I've been looking forward to this week for quite some time. It's the home of golf and it's even more special when the Open Championship is here.”

Westwood was drawn with Miguel Angel Jimenez and Adam Scott for his first and second round 3-ball, with the trio going out at 1342BST on Thursday. In spite of Westwood’s injury the bookmakers still fancy the Englishman to come out on top, Boyle Sports going 11/8 about Westwood, 9/5 on Scott and 11/5 on Jimenez.

As for the outright winner betting, well confidence in Europe’s highest ranked player is dwindling. Having previously been the 12/1 second favourite Westwood can now be backed at 22.0 (21/10) on Betfair. But, as the player himself commented, “beware the injured golfer.”
