The Open Betting: McIlroy Leads The Way

In unexpectedly calm conditions at St Andrews this morning Rory McIroy carded a marvellous nine under par 63 opening round to take the clubhouse lead in the 139th Open Championship.

Players that were drawn to play in the morning tee times had been expecting to awake to blustery conditions but got a pleasant surprise when stepping out onto the practice areas. The howling winds that had been wreaking havoc in the practice rounds earlier in the week had subsided leading Tiger Woods to proclaim “I have not seen scoring like that at a major like this before.”

Woods himself was happy with his round, despite dropping a shot on the 17th he finished with a five under par 67, four shots behind McIlroy’s outright lead.

With the wind picking up this afternoon it isn’t likely that we will see anyone challenge that lead and the young Irishman will be confident of being the overnight leader.

Ladbrokes make McIlroy the 3/1 favourite for the tournament with Woods just behind in The Open betting at 4/1.
