Montgomerie Names Ryder Cup Vice-Captains

Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has named Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley and Thomas Bjorn as his vice-captains for the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.

Both McGinley and Bjorn were expected to be named as Montgomerie’s right-hand men but the addition of Clarke is a slight surprise given that the player could feasibly still qualify to play in the event following his second place finish at the recent Scottish Open.

Clarke and Montgomerie have played together five times in the Ryder Cup, winning four of those matches, and are good friends off the course.

The eight-time Order of Merit winner concluded his announcement regarding the vice-captains by saying "This is a team, these four of us here have huge respect from the European Tour members and from the 12 players who will play in the Ryder Cup. There will be no more vice-captains.”

The USA captain Corey Pavin has opted for four vice-captains in Tom Lehman, Jeff Sluman, Davis Love and Paul Gydos.

Based on world rankings Europe has by far the strongest team, the first time that that has been said in many a year, and as a result the bookmakers make the home side the clear betting favourites. Bwin offer the best price of 7/10 on a European win, whilst Sportingbet offer 2/1 on a USA victory, and it is 10/1 across the board for a tie.
