Manchester United v Newcastle Betting Preview

Chelsea threw down the gauntlet on Saturday with a hugely impressive mauling of Premier League new boys West Bromwich Albion. It took the champions just six minutes to get underway through Florent Malouda before Didier Drogba went on to add a hat-trick and The Blues finished with six.

Manchester United will now know that they need to offer a response against Newcastle tonight. Even at this early stage of the season the psychological battle can be an important one, and Chelsea certainly hold the upper hand at this stage.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be without the service of long term absentees Owen Hargreaves and Anderson, and Rio Ferdinand remains on the sidelines with a knee injury. Andy Carroll and Alan Smith have both been declared fit for Newcastle.

The Magpies’ last Premier League campaign began with a trip to Old Trafford and they left with a 1-1 draw on that occasion. A repeat of that score line can be backed at 12/1 with Stan James.

However, one has to think that the Geordies may struggle this evening and the bookmakers certainly agree. Bet365 go just 2/9 on a home win with the draw at 5/1 and Newcastle at 14/1. Wayne Rooney hasn’t scored for five months, but he tends to save something special for games against Newcastle, back him at 3/1 to open the scoring tonight.
