Ballon dOr Betting Odds
FIFA have today released the 23-man shortlist for this year’s Ballon d’Or award and, as expected, it looks to be a tightly contested battle to be crowned the best player on the planet in 2010.
The three main contenders are Spanish midfield duo Xavi and Andres Iniesta and Inter Milan’s Dutch midfield maestro Wesley Sneijder.
Xavi and Iniesta orchestrated Spain’s World Cup triumph after guiding Barcelona to the La Liga title, but Sneijder’s World Cup runner-up medal was preceded by Serie A, Champions League and Italian Cup winner’s medals. Meaning all three have reason to believe that they can win the award this year.
The bookmakers don’t seem to be able to agree on who deserves the award with favourite with one or more of the big online betting firms.
Given that it is an award given to the best player in the world over the last calendar year it is perhaps no surprise that there are no Englishman in the shortlist. However, the Premier League is represented by Didier Drogba, Cesc Fabregas and Asamoah Gyan.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are thought not likely to become one of few players to win the award twice just yet. Neither player enjoyed great success in the World Cup in South Africa.
