Phil Vickery Retires

World Cup winner Phil Vickery has retired from rugby following another neck injury.

Vickery is one of just four players to have started both the 2003 and 2007 World Cup finals and goes down as one of England’s most successful props in history. He had previously recovered from four previous neck operations but has this time been told that the risk of serious injury was too great for him to make a comeback.

Vickery played his club rugby for Wasps and has captained the England side and been selected for the British Lions on five occasions.

The 34-year-old’s retirement means that only four of the starting XV that won the World Cup in 2003 are still playing top-flight rugby. Jonny Wilkinson, Mike Tindall, Steve Thompson and Ben Cohen being the quartet.
