Armstrong's Tour hopes threatened by injury
Lance Armstrong has suffered a broken collarbone while racing in Spain, placing his chances of competing in the Tour de France in doubt. The American cyclist was hoping to win the event for the eighth time, having come out of retirement to raise awareness of cancer. But his chances of taking part at all are now in jeopardy, having suffered the injury in a pileup during the first stage of the Vuelta of Castilla and Leon, around 12 miles from the end.Armstrong, 37, was due to participate in the Giro D'Italia in May - an event for which Betfair rates him at 10/1 - but failure to recover in time would deal a major blow to his preparation for the Tour."I never had this before. It is pretty painful," he said as he left hospital, adding: "I feel miserable."The Texan originally retired in 2005 having won the Tour de France seven consecutive times and is now hoping to become the competition's oldest ever winner.
