Federer favourite for French Open

Roger Federer has become the new bookies' favourite to win the French Open after top seed Rafael Nadal crashed out of the tournament yesterday. Nadal, who has won the competition four years running, suffered a shock defeat to 23rd seed Robin Soderling 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).This is the first match the Spaniard has lost at Roland Garros, but he appeared gracious in defeat: "He didn't surprise me because I know how he plays and how dangerous he can be."The 22-year old went on: "I was not calm enough to face the important points, so I had to fight. But sometimes fighting is not enough."Swiss Federer now has a chance of winning the open for the first time, after losing to Nadal in the final for the last three years. Nadal is the second top-four seed to go out of the championship this week after Novak Djokovic was bested by German Philipp Kohlschreiber on Saturday. Paddy Power now has Federer as most likely to win the tournament with odds offered at 11/10. For those looking closer to home, Britain's Andy Murray is available at 7/2 with Stan James.
