Jamaican athletes given all clear for world championships
Asafa Powell and four other top Jamaican athletes have been cleared to compete at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin later this month.The former 100-metre world record holder, as well as Olympic champions Melaine Walker and Shelly-Ann Fraser, and Shericka Williams and Brigitte Foster-Hylton, had faced being excluded from the competition after missing mandatory team training.
But after discussions between the IAAF and the Jamaican Amateur Athletics Association, it was decided they should be allowed to take part.
Powell, who has a personal best of 9.72 seconds, is the third favourite to win the men's 100 metres event, with Betfred(Go to Betfred ») offering odds of 28/1 on the 27-year-old.
Team-mate and current world record holder Usain Bolt is expected to triumph at 1/10 with Sportingbet(Go to Sportingbet »), ahead of 6/1 Tyson Gay of the US.
Meanwhile, Fraser is 3/1 at Totesport(Go to Totesport ») to take victory in the women's event, with fellow Jamaican Kerron Stewart the favourite at 4/6.
