Ben Haim goes to Sunderland on loan

Manchester City defender Tal Ben Haim will play for Sunderland until the end of the 2008-09 football season.The Black Cats signed the Israeli on loan over the weekend, in a move designed to strengthen the team at the back. "It's been a position we've been short in so I'm delighted that Tal has joined us," said manager Rick Sbragia of Ben Haim's centre back role. "He's got a lot of top-flight experience and he'll be a great addition to our squad."Sunderland currently lie 13th in the Premier League table following their 1-1 draw on Sunday with Newcastle United, who have also been on the lookout for a defender.Manager Joe Kinnear revealed that his club had put in a bid for Liverpool's Sami Hyypia, but were unsuccessful.His statement came as Manchester City signed Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given for an undisclosed fee.The transfer deadline comes to a close today (February 2nd) at 17:00 GMT.
