Eriksson 'turns down Pompey post'
Sven Goran Eriksson, the favourite in the football betting to take over as Portsmouth manager, has reportedly turned down the club's advances in order to stay with Mexico. The former England boss has endured a tough start to Mexico's 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, most recently losing 2-0 to the United States. However, after receiving the private backing of the country's football federation, it seems Portsmouth's first choice to replace Tony Adams will be staying put. As a result, Pompey could turn to the bookies' second favourite, ex-Chelsea caretaker Avram Grant. Grant has previously worked as technical director at Fratton Park prior to leaving for Stamford Bridge in July 2007. He is also close to Portsmouth owner Sacha Gaydamak, although the Russian businessman recently put the club up for sale after indicating that he is no longer willing to invest. Others thought to be in the running for the Pompey hot seat include Slaven Bilic, Alan Curbishley and former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni. However, the football betting odds have shortened on caretaker manager Paul Hart taking over permanently after Saturday's 2-0 victory over Manchester City. Portsmouth currently lie 15th in the Premier League.
