Everton's Arteta out for the season

Midfielder Mikel Arteta of Everton will not play again this season due to an injury suffered during Sunday's 0-0 draw against Newcastle United. The Spaniard, who has scored seven goals for the Toffees in 2008-09, ruptured a knee ligament when he fell towards the start of the first half at St James' Park.Everton are currently in the chase for a place in Europe next year, sitting in sixth place in the table, six points behind Arsenal. The loss of Arteta will be considered a blow to their chances of overtaking the Gunners, although they remain odds-on to finish inside the top six in the football betting. They have a six-point advantage over Wigan Athletic in seventh and are a further two points ahead of their next nearest rivals, Fulham and West Ham United.Arteta will join striker Yakubu on the sidelines after it was confirmed that he too will miss the rest of the season with a ruptured Achilles.
