Pressure mounts on Newcastle
Newcastle United's chances of staying in the Premier league have suffered a blow following a goalless draw at home to Portsmouth.Magpies manager Alan Shearer opted to play three strikers in a bid to secure a vital win and the side's three best chances fell to Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins and Mark Viduka. However, the hosts were ultimately lucky to secure a point after Richard Hughes struck the post for Pompey late on. Boyle Sports had priced Newcastle 5/6 to go down before the match, but with only four games remaining and the team three points from safety, the odds have now come in to 1/3. William Hill, meanwhile, is offering punters 9/4 that they will avoid the drop, that price having gone out from 6/4.Spokesman Graham Sharpe remarked: "That's four games and no wins for Shearer - the Match of the Day studio must be looking ever more appealing."
