Shearer: I want to stay
Ex-England striker Alan Shearer has made it clear he wishes to stay as manager of Newcastle United, despite the club being relegated to the Championship. Shearer took over at the club for the tail-end of last season, but was unable to keep the Magpies up after eight games in charge. He has revealed that he met with owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias to negotiate the terms of his stay at St James' Park "I met [them] last week and we discussed at length the future of Newcastle United and my desire to be the manager moving forward," he said. The former player confirmed he should know "by the end of the week" whether he will take over permanently. Owner Mike Ashley recently put Newcastle up for sale for the second time, after failing to find a bidder on a previous occasion. The club are currently favourites to top the Championship next season at 4/1 with BetDaq. Longer odds are available on fellow north-east side Middlesbrough, who can be bought at 6/1 at Ladbrokes.
