Alonso looks set for Real
A possible move to Real Madrid is looking all the more likely for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso after the Reds' managing director Christian Purslow confirmed the two teams are in talks about the player's future. Mr Purslow, talking to Spanish newspaper AS, said a meeting between himself and Madrid executive Jose Angel has taken place to clear up any media speculation.
He remarked: "Rafa [Benitez] arranged this knowing what was coming. It was important that we know. So far, most of what is being said is a lie. We were negotiating through the press. It makes no sense."
The Liverpool supremo admitted that more talks will need to take place before a deal can be finalised, although he stated he was impressed by Angel and the La Liga club.
It has been rumoured that Benitez has been reluctant to sell the Spanish international, but has changed his stance after Alonso submitted a written transfer request.
