Chelsea favourites despite transfer ban

Chelsea remain the favourites to lift this year's Premier League trophy, despite suggestions that the side will struggle in the wake of their transfer ban.

Fifa yesterday (September 3rd) forbade the Stamford Bridge club from bringing in any new players until January 2011 after finding them guilty of making Gael Kakuta break his contract with former team Lens.

Bookmaker Coral(Go to Coral ») still has the Roman Abramovich-owned side as most likely to win the 2009-10 campaign and, according to Chelsea's website, the club "will mount the strongest appeal possible" in face of the punishment.

It said in a statement: "The sanctions are without precedent to this level and totally disproportionate to the alleged offence and the financial penalty imposed."

Chelsea currently sit at the top of the Premier League table on 12 points from four games.

They are set to face Stoke away from home in their next match, with Skybet(Go to Skybet ») offering 9/4 odds on the visitors taking three points.
