Fergie: Patience Was The Key To City Win
Manchester United prevailed over their northern rivals Manchester City because of their patience, the club's manager has stated. Sir Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports it was this persistence that was the key factor in the Reds' semi-final Carling Cup 4-3 aggregate victory over the Eastlands side.
"Nothing really happened in the first half. They sat very deep," he remarked. "I think we kept our patience, I think this was important."
The 68-year-old was also quick to highlight Wayne Rooney's performance, with the England international scoring the 90th minute goal to seal the game.
Rooney put in a "world-class" effort, Sir Alex stated, adding that his control and penetration were both "absolutely fantastic".
According to the coach, the striker played even better than he did against Hull City last week, a match in which he scored four goals.
United now face Aston Villa in the final of the Carling Cup, with both William Hill(Go to William Hill ») and Stan James(Go to Stan James ») offering odds of 4/9 on the 2008-09 Premier League champions lifting the trophy this year.
