Owen's England Hopes Dashed By Injury

Any hopes Michael Owen may have had regarding appearing for England in this year's World Cup have been dashed by news that his recent injury will see him out for the season.

The Manchester United player limped off the pitch against Aston Villa in last weekend's League Cup final after levelling the scores following an early Villa penalty.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the damaged hamstring will see Owen on the sidelines for the remainder of the campaign.

"It's a bad blow for Michael and he's out for the season," he told the club's official website. "It was more serious than we thought and he'll have an operation on Monday."

It may be good news for the Wolverhampton Wanderers fans, who will see their side play the Reds tomorrow (March 6th).

Wayne Rooney and Johnny Evans may also be unavailable for selection, while Rio Ferdinand has been confirmed as fit.

Despite the injury news, United are still heavy favourites for the match at the Molineux, with Coral(Go to Coral ») and Betfred(Go to Betfred ») offering odds of 1/3 on an away victory.
