Fernando Torres Is An Injury Doubt For The World Cup

Fernando Torres faces a race against time to be fit for the World Cup, it has been revealed.

Peter Brukner, Liverpool's new head of sports medicine and sports science, noted that the Spain star could miss the start of the tournament.

Spain are the 4/1 favorites with Bet365(Go to Bet365 ») to add the title to their European Championship win two years ago, with Stan James(Go to Stan James ») offering 5/1 on Brazil coming out on top.

Mr Brukner said: "We're anxious not to hurry him along too much because we want the long-term benefit, but we're aware he's got the short-term goal of playing in the World Cup."

Torres had surgery on his right knee after he sustained a small tear in his meniscus during the Europa League tie against Benfica.

According to Mr Brukner, he is hopeful of getting a compromise that will allow him to participate but still be fit for next season.
