Sea The Stars 'may not stay the Derby distance'

Sea The Stars' chances of winning the Derby have been played down by his trainer. The colt is a 3/1 joint favourite with Blue Square - alongside Fame And Glory - and is being backed after victory in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. However, he has not been tested over more than eight furlongs and John Oxx told the Times that the horse is not guaranteed to stay the distance. The Epsom classic is run over a mile-and-a-half and the trainer explained that there is only a "50-50 chance" that Sea The Stars will complete the race."Everyone said he is a half-brother to Galileo and therefore a Derby horse, but I knew he was speedy and his pedigree wasn't that of a sure-fire stayer," Oxx was quoted as saying.Fame And Glory was victorious in the Ballysax Stakes recently and is given odds of 11/4 by Stan James, while Rip Van Winkle is also a leading contender at 4/1.
