The Cheka may run Newbury
Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton has confirmed that The Cheka should be running in the Shadwell Nunnery Stud Conditions Stakes at Newbury today after ten months of inaction. A number of problems have prevented the horse from making an appearance in races over its three-year career but Houghton hopes the colt will be ready in time. She said: "It sounds a bit ridiculous after nearly a year off the track but I could have just done with another week with him." If The Cheka does not run at Newbury, the trainer added, there are relatively few options available, with races at Pontefract and Goodwood not being ideal. While the race looks tough, she remarked, the colt has "done really well" and the aim would be to get him ready for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot. Betdaq(Go to Betdaq ») currently has The Cheka at 16/5 to romp home first in the Nunnery Stud Stakes, while Betfair(Go to Betfair ») considers Ashram the favourite at 13/15.
