Trainer Has Cheltenham Gold Cup Hope For Joncol

The trainer of Irish gelding Joncol has said he would like to think his horse will be up there with the favourites for this year's Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Whether the powerful chaser will be in the prestigious race depends on how well he does in the Hennessy Gold Cup next month, but Paul Nolan hinted to the Independent he is hoping his charge can mount a strong challenge in the three and a quarter miler in March.

"The Gold Cup is only at the back of our minds but it would be nice to think - Kauto Star and Denman apart, of course - that he could be among the best of the contenders," he remarked.

Joncol is the seventh favourite at the bookmakers to win the race, with Blue Square(Go to Blue Square ») offering odds of 25/1 on him springing an upset.

Kauto Star is expected to hold on to his title at Stan James(Go to Stan James »), where his chances are priced at 5/4.
