Mon Mome 'ready For Grand National'

Last year's surprise winner of the Grand National - Mon Mome - will carry an extra seven pounds going into the 2010 race.

The Venetia Williams-trained horse is 12/1 with Sportingbet(Go to Sportingbet ») to last the distance again and she will be hoping that her mount can continue its good recent form, having just finished third in the Gold Cup.

Big Fella Thanks is the current favourite with the bookies, available at 10/1 with Ladbrokes(Go to Ladbrokes »).

But it is the incumbent who is garnering the headlines, with Ms Williams noting that her runner is in with a shot.

"His preparation has gone a lot better than it did last year and we have got a blueprint to follow. We were all very buoyed by what we saw … at Cheltenham," she added.

It was a bit naughty using that race as a build-up for Aintree, Ms Williams remarked, but added that his run was pleasing.

A notable scratching is the Ryanair Chase champion Albertas Run, while 2006 Gold Cup victor War of Attrition has also been pulled out.
