Vaughan fails to impress Ashes selectors
Michael Vaughan's chances of securing a spot in the Ashes squad have suffered a blow after the former England captain failed to impress for the MCC against Durham. The county champions reached 311 before declaring, with rain delays forcing a draw as several cheap wickets left the MCC on 126-7 by the close of play. And Vaughan could manage just 12 runs before being dismissed, with fellow Ashes hopeful Ian Bell falling for the same score. But Australian bowler Mitchell Claydon, who claimed Vaughan's wicket, noted that his countrymen may be encouraged by the possible absence of the former skipper."I am sure they would rather see an England side without him," said Claydon, adding: "He's a big-game player. He proved that the last time the Ashes were here."Robert Key, a contender for the England captaincy in the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup, was the first MCC player to be dismissed, managing just five runs.Australia are currently 5/8 favourites to retain the Ashes with Sportingbet, the bookmaker giving the challengers odds of 9/4.
