Aussie captain admits he may need back-up

Captain Ricky Ponting has admitted Australia may need to call in reinforcements to their Ashes touring squad in England as teammate Shane Watson has picked up an injury. Watson has been prevented from appearing in a warm-up match against Sussex due to a damaged knee and team officials have talked about a replacement player. Ponting said: "That's what some of the discussions about, particularly if we happen to have, for an unknown reason, a batter happen to hurt themselves in this game then we could be a little bit short." The Australia skipper was not able to speculate about the extent of the injury but said he was hopeful that the all-rounder would return within a couple of days. Results of a scan to discover whether Watson will be able to play in any of the three tourists' training matches in Hove are due to be released today. Odds on the Ashes are available at a number of bookmakers with Ladbrokes (Go to Ladbrokes ») offering England to win the Series at 9/4. Australia are the favourites at 8/11 with Stan James (Go to Stan James »).
