Williams sisters proceed in Stanford
Serena and Venus Williams have both made it through their opening round tennis match-ups at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford. Elder sister Venus was able to defeat Canadian wildcard Stephanie Dubois in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, but her younger sibling had slightly more trouble with her opponent. American Serena faced Li Na, with the recent Wimbledon ladies champion breaking three times in the first set. However, the Chinese player rallied back to force the second set to a tie breaker, before Williams secured the victory 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Commenting on her performance, the former world number one said: "Obviously, I can play better
I think I hit five first serves the whole match, so obviously that can improve."The tournament continues today (July 29th) with Maria Sharapova due to play Nadia Petrova in an all-Russian match. Grand-slam winner Sharapova is the favourite at 8/13 with 888Sport(Go to 888sport »), while Centrebet(Go to Centrebet ») has her opponent at 11/10.
