Murray favoured for US Open victory

British number one Andy Murray is the second favourite to take the US Open and defeated his first-round opponent Ernests Gulbis in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 7-5.

Stan James(Go to Stan James ») currently has the Scotsman at odds of 5/2, with only the world number one Rogerer Federer considered more likely to lift the Grand Slam trophy at Flushing Meadows at evens with Sportingbet(Go to Sportingbet »).

Murray was able to dispatch Latvian Gulbis in a little over two hours, setting up a second-round match with Paul Capdeville.

According to the second seed, he knows Capdeville "pretty well", having trained with him in Barcelona when he was younger.

Commenting on his opponent, Murray said: "He won comfortably today so it's going to be a tough match but I played well tonight."

Roger Federer is due to face Simon Greul in his next match-up, with the recent Wimbledon a huge favourite at 1/200 with bookmaker Blue Square(Go to Blue Square »).
