Federer is favourite despite Greul challenge

Roger Federer remains the favourite to win the US Open, despite having to up his game against Simon Greul in the second round.

Federer, who has won the Flushing Meadows tournament on five previous occasions, defeated the German in straight sets 6-3 7-5 7-5, but the Swiss was forced to save two set points in the second set.

Greul also managed to break the world number one in the third set to lead 3-0 in games, however, he was unable to capitalise.

Commenting on his performance, Federer said: "I had to raise my level today to win because that's what was required to get through," adding that he "had to make [Greul] play more shots".

In the third round, Federer will face Lleyton Hewitt, with the American a 10/1 underdog at Bet365(Go to Bet365 ») to overcome the reigning US Open champion.
