Canford Cliffs Retired to Stud

Five-time Group One winner Canford Cliffs has been retired to stud having suffered a minor leg injury.

The Richard Hannon trained horse finished a distant second to Frankel in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Good wood last week, in a race that was dubbed the ‘Duel on the Downs’.

Although connections were reluctant to make excuses for the defeat they have now decided to call and end to four-year-old’s racing career.

“We got him back to the yard and he [part-owner Robin Heffer] has taken the decision to retire him,” said Richard Hannon Jr. “We don't want anything to happen to him.”

“I think he's got the startings of an injury. He definitely wasn't himself last week. He'll leave a massive hole in the yard,” Hannon Jnr added.

Richard Hannon Snr has since confirmed on his website that the horse “has a bit of a shadow on the joint running into the pastern and that could turn into something nasty.”

“He now goes off to stud sound. If anything happened to him, I couldn't forgive myself.”
