Murray moves to third in rankings
Andy Murray has overtaken Roger Federer in the ATP World Rankings, above Roger Federer and behind Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, following victory in the final of the Shanghai Masters.
The Scot registered his third tournament victory of the month in Asia with a 7-5 6-4 triumph over David Ferrer in the final on Sunday. A result that moved him up once place in the rankings ahead of the Swiss star.
“I'm still not guaranteed to finish at number three, I'm going to have to win some more matches,” said Murray/
“But if you finish in front of Federer in a year, then there's not many people the last five, six, seven years that have been able to say that.”
Murray has already won in Japan and Thailand this month, beating Rafael Nadal in the final of the Japan Open and Donald Young the week previously in Thailand. He will take this week off as the tour goes to Moscow.
Federer isn’t involved either so won’t overtake Murray in the rankings but the new world number three knows that the 16-time Grand Slam winner is far from being a spent force in the game.
“For a lot of years everything went very right for Federer.” Added Murray. “He's had a few tournaments this year where maybe things could have gone his way and they didn't but I'm sure next year he'll be competing. He's still playing great tennis.”
