Next England Rugby Coach Betting

Following an unsuccessful and hugely controversial World Cup campaign Martin Johnson has resigned as coach of England’s rugby team and the search for his successor has begun.

“I think it is in the best interests of both the England team and myself not to carry on,” said Johnson.

“I have a choice at the moment. If I hadn't made that decision someone may have made it for me.”

The Rugby Football Union’s director of elite rugby Rob Andrew will not be following Johnson out of the exit door and is expected to have a roll in finding a successor.

Current Northampton Saints and former Sale Sharks coach Jim Mallinder has been installed as the bookies’ early favourite in the next England rugby coach betting markets. Stan James (Go to Stan James ») currently offer and industry best price of 3/1 on the 45-year-old.

He is closely followed in the betting by former All Blacks coach Graham Henry at odds of 9/2.

Former Italy and South Africa coach Nick Malett was thought to be a contender but he has since ruled himself out.

“I was interested to hear what the RFU had to say,” said Malett on Wednesday.

“After mulling it over for a few days and discussing the opportunity with friends and family, I have decided that I will not be making myself available.”

Others in the running include Joe Schmidt (8/1), John Kirwan (11/1) and Nick Mallett (16/1).
