Kirwan eyes England role

New Zealander John Kirwan has admitted that he would be keen to take charge of England for the Six Nations tournament next year.

England are seeking a new coach following the departure of Martin Johnson, but are expected to delay making a permanent appointment until after the six nations tournament. A number of names have been suggested as possible caretaker managers and now Kirwan has stated his desire for the job.

“I understand the situation the RFU is in at the moment, but I'm a little bit different to the other coaches,” said Kirwan.

“Others like Nick [Mallett] and Wayne [Smith] are saying no because of the structure above, but I'm at a different stage of my career.

“I'm a young coach, I enjoy risk, I love attack. Someone needs to get in there and sort the team out.

“If I'm not part of the future I'm prepared to do it as long as I'm set up to help these boys get back on the pitch and win football games.”

Kirwan earned 63 caps for the All Blacks between 1984 and 1994 and since retiring has gone on to coach Italy and Japan at national level.

Bookmaker Bet365 (Go to Bet365 ») price Kirwan at odds of 12/1 to be the next England Head Coach. Jim Mallinder is their 8/11 betting favourite.
