Villas-Boas hits back at critics
Andre Villas-Boas has called for more respect for himself, his players and his team after Chelsea booked their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The Blues went into their final group stage match knowing that they needed a win or goalless draw in order to progress. A 3-0 victory was more than enough to see them go through and release some of the pressure that was beginning to mount on the manager’s shoulders following a run of five defeats in nine matches.
“My players deserve respect they don't get,” said the Portuguese following their win on Tuesday.
“We've been chased by different kinds of people and pressures. Here we have given everyone a slap in the face.”
The former Porto manager then moved to criticise Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville for comments he made about the Blues.
“We see a Manchester United defender say in the preparations for the game things like, 'I don't want to be one of the Chelsea players today, I couldn't play this game and it is a difficult game for them'.
“This is out of this world for me, I don't believe this. This is a continuous persecution, it is aggression towards one club.”
Villas-Boas had been backed into 5/1 to be the next Premier League manager to get the sack and is currently priced at odds of 15/8 with Paddy Power (Go to Paddy Power ») not to last the season at Stamford Bridge.
