Rooney international ban reduced
Wayne Rooney’s international ban has been reduced from three matches to two following an appeal. The England striker will now only miss the opening two games of Euro 2012.
Rooney was banned following a red card received in England’s final qualifier when the 26-year-old lashed out at Moidrag Dzudovic and will now miss games against France and Sweden, but could return for the game against Ukraine.
As part of the reduction in the ban Rooney will do one day of community service with Uefa, with the third match of his ban being suspended for four years.
“The ban applies only to national team competition governed by Uefa,” said a Uefa spokesperson.
There had previously been some doubt as to whether Fabio Capello would include Wayne Rooney in his Euro 2012 squad given he would have missed all three group games. However, today’s news is though to have put that matter to bed.
Victor Chandler now offer odds of 6/1 that Rooney is not included in the Euro 2012 squad.
