McIlroy slip up hands Donald advantage
Rory McIlroy finished his second round at the Dubai World Championships with back-to-back bogeys to hand the advantage back to Luke Donald in golf’s Race to Dubai.
McIlroy has to win the season-ending Dubai World Championships, and hope that Donald finishes outside of the top nine, to top the European Tour’s order of merit. However, a 71 on Friday left him five shots behind pacesetter Alvaro Quiros at the halfway point.
Donald, meanwhile, climbed up the leaderbaord with a second round 68 and is now tied 12th heading into the weekend.
“I was frustrated out there. I tried to stay patient, but it's tough. I want to finish off what I came here to do and those last three holes [three consecutive birdies] brought a smile to my face,” said the world number one.
“There's certainly a lot of pressure. I'm still making a few mistakes - maybe because of what's at stake. When there's a lot on the line you feel more nervous, but sometimes it's a good thing.”
Skybet (Go to Skybet ») now make Donald odds of 1/14 to win the Race to Dubai, with McIlroy quoted at odds of 13/2 to overhaul him.
Interestingly, If Donald ends up sharing 9th place with one other player and McIlroy does win the tournament, the Englishman will win the Race to Dubai by a measly £3.55. Less than the price of a pint in many establishments.
