Serena suffers Australian Open setback

Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the Brisbane International following an ankle injury sustained in her second round match. The American is the strong betting favourite for the first Grand Slam of the year, which begins on January 16.

William, who is looking for her 14th Grand Slam title, is, however, hopeful of being able to play in the Australian Open, and had even been optimistic about being able to continue in Brisbane when speaking last night.

“I'm anticipating it'll be OK,” said Williams after her match.

“My initial thoughts [are that] I'm thinking I can play on. But at the same time I don't want to stress it out right now.

“I'm just going to play it by ear and see how I feel when I wake up in the morning.”

But this morning she has been forced to withdraw and will now be focused on returning to full fitness ahead of her attempts to win a sixth Australian Open title. Victor Chandler (Go to VCBet ») currently make her the 3/1 betting favourite, although that price could increase when the full extent of the injury is revealed.
