Murray 5/1 for Australian open glory
Andy Murray has been cut to 5/1 to win the Australian Open after progressing to the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam following the retirement of Kazakhstani Mikhail Kukushkin in the round of 16.
The Scot was in complete control of the match at 6-1 6-1 1-0 when his opponent pulled out of the match with a left hip flexor problem, and was grateful of the opportunity to conserve energy.
“It was hot on the court and it is good for me that I have conserved energy,” said the world number four.
“I played him [Kukushkin] a few weeks ago at Brisbane and it was three tough sets and I expected another tough one today.”
Murray’s hopes of a maiden Grand Slam title were also boosted by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s surprise elimination at the hands of Japan’s Kei Nishikori.
Ladbrokes (Go to Ladbrokes ») make Murray a 1/12 chance to see off the youngster and set up a potential semi-final with defending champion Novak Djokovic, in what would be a repeat of last year’s final.
