Hurricane Flys to victory on return

Hurricane Fly made a winning return to the track and was consequently cut to odds-on prices for back-to-back Champion Hurdle successes.

The Willie Mullins trained gelding beat Peddlers Cross to justify favouritism in last year’s Champion Chase and now the race sponsors Stan James (Go to Stan James ») offer odds of 5/6 on him landing the double.

Hurricane Fly had been off the track since ending last season with a Grade 1 success at Punchestown, but didn’t disappoint in his first race of the season at Leopardstown on Sunday as he beat Oscars Well, Thousand Stars and Unaccompanied in facile fashion.

“He really surprised me how well he did it yesterday,” said trainer Mullins on Monday.

“He was very quiet in the parade ring beforehand, but maybe he's just maturing.

“"He was very good in the race and I hope he can improve, but, having said that, if I can get him to Cheltenham in the same sort of form as he was yesterday I think I'd be happy enough.”

Oscars Well was pushed out to 12/1 for Festival success following the race, with Unaccompanied and Thousand Stars at 16/1 and 25/1 respectively. Grandouet remains the 6/1 second favourite, Zarkandar is an 8/1 chance and Binocular is 9/1.
