Junior leads Grand National betting

Coral make David Pipe’s Junior their 12/1 favourite for this year’s Grand National after the weights were unveiled on Tuesday morning.

Lexus Chase winner Synchronised was handed top weight and is consequently a 16/1 chance alongside last year’s winner Ballabriggs, West End Rocker and Prince De Beauchene.

“Not many horses win at both Royal Ascot and the Cheltenham Festival, but Junior has achieved that feat, and the early betting suggests he could complete an historic treble with victory in the most famous race of all,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

“One of his closest market rivals is Ballabriggs, and having given the first family of Aintree an emotional win last year, Donald McCain will be hoping to emulate his late father Ginger once more by sending out the first back-to-back winner since Red Rum, while Prince De Beauchene caught our odds-compilers’ eyes, and is 16-1 (from 25-1) having been allotted a handy looking 10-6.”

William Hill (Go to William Hill ») have opened a range of specials on The National and offer odds of 7/4 that the winner will be Irish trained. Willie Mullins is the 5/1 favoruite to train the winner, followed by David Pipe at 8/1 and Donald McCain at 10/1.

“With the McCain family tree and previous winners performing well in subsequent attempts, surely Ballabriggs holds a real chance to be the first back-to-back winner of the world’s most famous race since the immortal Red Rum,” said Lucy Rhodes of William Hill.
