England Snub "a Blessing In Disguise" For Wellens
Tony Smith's decision to leave St Helens star Paul Wellens out of the England side seems to have rejuvenated the full-back.
Rather than express disappointment at missing his first off-season of international duty for seven years, Wellens told the Super League website that the time away from the sport has helped him in some ways.
"When I didn't get called up for the internationals at the end of the year, I took it as a blessing in disguise," he said, adding that getting "plenty of rest" has been beneficial.
Fellow Saints stars Leon Pryce, Maurie Fa'asavalu, Ade Gardner and Leon Pryce were also overlooked by Smith and Wellens expects it to benefit the side when they kickoff their 2010 campaign against Hull FC this weekend.
The Knowsley Park outfit lost to Leeds in the Grand Final for the third consecutive time last year and are priced 11/4 by Betfred (Go to Betfred ») to go one better this time around.
However, the Rhinos are the favourites and Stan James (Go to Stan James ») offers odds of 5/4.
