Cavendish wins first cycling race of the season

Cavendish won four stages on the Tour de France last year

Cyclist Mark Cavendish picked up his first sprint victory of the season this week, winning stage four of the Tour of Qatar. The Briton, who won four stages in the 2008 Tour de France, beat Germany's Heinrich Haussler and Belgian Tom Boonen to the line in what was his first race of the year.BBC Sport quoted him as saying afterwards: "Apart from being a victory over Tom Boonen, it was certainly a victory over myself. "I really had to push myself to stick with the leaders towards the end."Cavendish and Boonen are currently the joint favourites in the cycling betting to win the coveted Green Jersey at the 2009 Tour de France.Boonen won the title in 2007, but was banned from competing in 2008 when third favourite for this year Oscar Friere took the crown. It was generally felt that Cavendish could have won more than four stages last year had he not withdrawn part way through the Tour to compete in the Beijing Olympic Games.
