Branson facing race to save Honda F1 team

Richard Branson is reportedly keen on a bid for Honda's F1 team.

With just over a month to go until the start of the new Formula One season, Honda could face a race against time to secure its future amid reports that Richard Branson's Virgin group is interested in bidding for the team. According to the Guardian, any deal may have to be finalised within "a matter of days", as Honda reportedly has until Monday, February 23rd to guarantee the season's payment for its engine supplier, Mercedes-Benz. If Branson buys the team ahead of March 29th's Australian Grand Prix, it will secure around 700 jobs and provide an opportunity for Bruno Senna - the nephew of F1 great Ayrton Senna - to make his debut at the sport's highest level. Reigning champion Lewis Hamilton of McLaren-Mercedes is favourite in the current betting to win the 2009 driver's title. Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso are seen as his main challengers. Ferrari are favourites for the constructors' championship, followed by McLaren-Mercedes and BMW Sauber.
